Tiji Festival 2025: A Spiritual and Cultural Experience in Upper Mustang

Description

The Tiji Festival is not just a celebration — it is an ancient spiritual ceremony rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, held in the majestic and mysterious walled city of Lo Manthang in Nepal's Upper Mustang region. Scheduled for May 24–26, 2025, this unique festival dates back to the 17th century and continues to mesmerize visitors with its symbolism, vibrant rituals, and otherworldly setting.

Over three days, the monks of Chhode Monastery perform sacred masked dances called "Tsa Chham" and "Nga Chham," reenacting the legendary tale of Dorje Jono, a deity who defeated evil spirits to restore harmony to the land. These dramatic dances are performed in elaborate costumes, accompanied by chants, drums, and traditional Tibetan horns that echo through the ancient kingdom of Mustang.

Lo Manthang’s medieval architecture, stone-paved alleys, and red-walled monasteries offer an immersive experience for spiritual travelers, culture enthusiasts, and photographers. The festival is more than a show — it’s a community purification ritual that is deeply rooted in the identity and beliefs of the people of Mustang.
