South Asian Climate Action Conference 2023 & Everest Climate Action Award 2023

Description

South Asia, home to over 1.9 billion people, comprises Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This region is characterized by its rich diversity in languages, religions, and cultures. However, it is also highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its geographical features, including the Himalayas, coastal areas, and river deltas.

The consequences of climate change in South Asia are evident in the melting glaciers of the Himalayas, causing floods and the formation of glacial lakes that pose threats to downstream communities. Rising sea levels affect coastal areas, leading to saltwater intrusion and limited access to safe drinking water. Erratic rainfall patterns, extreme weather events, and increased temperatures impact the agriculture sector, resulting in reduced crop yields and food insecurity for small-scale farmers.

South Asia is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, with India ranking among the top emitters worldwide. However, efforts are being made in the region to combat climate change, such as the implementation of renewable energy programs and emission reduction initiatives.

To address these urgent challenges, the Youth Development Center (YDC), Land Our Future (LOF), and National Youth Council (NYC) are jointly organizing the South Asian Climate Action Conference (SACAC) in Kathmandu, Nepal from 23-25 May 2023. The conference will be chaired by Former Minister of Environment Ministry of Nepal, Hon. Sunil Kumar Manandhar.

SACAC aims to provide a platform for young leaders, including climate activists, researchers, scholars, government representatives, university students, and civil society pioneers from South Asian countries. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, SACAC 2023 will facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and the creation of partnerships towards a sustainable and resilient future.

The conference will gather approximately 125 delegates aged between 16 and 40, representing diverse backgrounds and nations, with a gender-balanced participation. It will feature thematic presentations by experts and cross-cutting presentations from delegates across various sectors.

The SACAC 2023 will be inaugurated by the Vice President of Nepal, Hon. Ram Sahaya Yadav, and the Hon. Former Environment Minister of Nepal, Sunil Kumar Manandhar, will serve as the chairman. The event will be attended by government officials, diplomats, and notable guests, including Honorable Ministers, Resident Ambassadors, Senior Diplomats, and UN officials.

Join SACAC 2023 in Kathmandu as we unite the youth of South Asia to tackle climate change, share experiences, and forge a sustainable future for the region.
